Lockheed Martin has received a $1-billion contract to produce the MK21A Reentry Vehicle for the US Air Force’s Sentinel Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

According to the contract announcement, the company will facilitate the design, engineering, and manufacturing of a “low technical risk” and “affordable” reentry vehicle for the next-generation missile weapon.

The Mk21A is said to be a critical component of the Sentinel as it will carry the missile’s payload – a powerful W87-1 nuclear warhead.

Work for the contract will be performed in Pennsylvania and is expected to be complete by October 2026.

The production agreement was signed ahead of the US Department of Defense’s initial schedule, which was 2026.

Lockheed Receives $996M Air Force Contract for Sentinel Reentry Vehicle Development

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has secured a $996.2 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to design and manufacture a next-generation reentry vehicle for the service branch’s intercontinental ballistic missile weapon system.

The contract covers engineering, manufacturing and design services for the MK21A Reentry Vehicle for the Sentinel program, the Department of Defense said Monday.

The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center at Hill Air Force Base in Utah awarded the contract on a sole source basis and is obligating $26.6 million in fiscal 2024 research, development, test and evaluation funds at time of award.

Work will occur in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and other locations until Oct. 20, 2039.

Lockheed also manufactured a reentry vehicle for the Air Force’s W87-1 nuclear warhead under a $108.3 million contract awarded in October 2019.
